The Ugly Asian, Syed Waliullah’s only novel in English, was posthumously published in 2013 by the Bangla Academy. Waliulllah, who had started his career in the English-language Statesman in Calcutta, was equally skilled in both Bengali and English. While his major contribution to Bengali literature is Lalsalu [Tree Without Roots] (1948), he was writing short stories in both English and Bengali. Thus both “No Enemy” and “The Escape” were published early in his career. However, Waliullah thought himself primarily to be a Bengali writer.
