The Vida de Santo Domingo de Silos (VSDS) or Life of Saint Dominic of Silos is one of four hagiographies attributed to Gonzalo de Berceo. Active during the first half of the thirteenth century, Gonzalo, who wrote in Old Castilian, is recognized as the earliest author of Spanish vernacular literature to sign his works by name. Archival records and references in his poems permit researchers to sketch out a limited biography of the poet. Gonzalo took his surname from the village of Berceo in northern Spain’s Rioja province, where he was born in the late twelfth century.
