Gavin Douglas’ poem The Palice of Honour (1501) is a text from the turn of the sixteenth century: Priscilla Bawcutt states the approximate date of its completion as 1501 (Bawcutt, Gavin Douglas: A Critical Study 49). Often overlooked in light of his later work the Eneados (1513), a vernacular translation of Virgil’s Aeneid, The Palice of Honour is a text perceived by many as a “trial run” (Parkinson, “The Palis of Honoure: Introduction”). Despite this reputation, The Palice of Honour is a complex text richly indebted to the late medieval traditions of love poetry and courtly verse.
