The Visitor, published posthumously in 2001, is the first work written by Maeve Brennan. Brennan obviously intended her novella for publication during her lifetime, sending it to the prominent Catholic publishing company Sheed and Ward. While both Angela Bourke, Brennan’s biographer, and Christopher Carduff, the novella’s editor, speculate on the circumstances contributing to the manuscript being mis-placed and date its completion to the mid-1940s (Bourke, 2005: 150; Carduff, 2006: 104), the novella’s provenance remains largely a matter of conjecture. The only extant copy is currently held at the University of Notre Dame Library where it was found “in 1997 among the papers of Maisie Ward” (Bourke, 2005: 150).
