Jackie Kay’s Red Dust Road was published in 2010 and it received the Scottish Book of the Year Award. The poems included in the collection Fiere (2011) are intended to accompany the reading of the autobiography. Written as a memoir and a travelogue, it documents the author’s search for her birth parents. Her biological mother and father met in Aberdeen in the early 1960s, where she worked as a nurse and he was a student from Nigeria. Soon after she had become pregnant and gone to Edinburgh to deliver the baby, he went back home to Nigeria. The baby girl was adopted when she was five months old by the Kay family.
