Laura Esquivel’s Como agua para chocolate: Novela de entregas mensuales con recetas, amores y remedios caseros (1989) was the number one bestselling book in Mexico for three years. The novel went on to become an international success, selling over 4.5 million copies. It was published in English in 1992. Concerning a tyrannical mother who forces her daughter to care for her rather than marrying, CAPC is set against the tempestuous backdrop of the Mexican Revolution during the early 1900s.
