Background

Published in 1952, Peau Noire, Masques Blancs (hereafter, PNMB) by Frantz Fanon is an impassioned analysis of the psychopathology of European colonialism, the racism inherent in this project, and its psychological impact on the victims of colonisation. PNMB was translated into English as Black Skin, White Masks (BSWM) by Charles Lam Markmann in 1967. This essay follows the 2008 edition of Markmann’s translation.

PNMB/BSWM remains one of the most significant works by Fanon, and also of the 20th Century. It has influenced scholars, activists, various fields of study and social justice movements.
