Vasilii Grossman’s long and powerful article is one of the first published accounts of a Nazi death camp in any language. Grossman was with the Red Army when it reached Treblinka in mid-August 1944; his article is dated September 1944, and it was published in the November 1944 issue of the journal Znamia.

“The Hell of Treblinka” was quickly translated into a number of languages – English, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Romanian and Yiddish in 1945, and Polish and Slovenian in 1946.
