Das siebte Kreuz [The Seventh Cross], the popular antifascist novel about seven concentration camp escapees in 1937, bolstered the international reputation of its author, the prolific Anna Seghers. The novel has been a well-received source of information on the Hitler era for readers around the world – indeed, it was the first novel to deal intensively with the Nazi concentration camps before 1945, and it has since been translated into over forty languages.
