This novel was written as the sequel to Stevie Smith's highly successful debut Novel on Yellow Paper (1936), which had been followed with the first volume of her poetry a year later, A Good Time Was Had by All (1937). In fact, Over the Frontier was completed towards the end of 1936, as its narrator Pompey Casmilus records:
I am involved in the proof corrections of my first novel, even while I write these words, so well on now into the second. Perhaps it is a little debilitating to being a second whilst the first is on hand?
