Walter Pater's first title for the collection of essays that he prepared for publication in 1889 was “On Style, With other studies in literature” [Evans, 1970, p. 97]. On October 18, after the type had been set for the book and the proofs returned by Pater, Frederick Macmillan, the publisher, wrote Pater: “I understand from Clark [the printer] that he is still waiting for the return ‘for press' of the title page of your new book” [Seiler, The Book Beautiful, 1999, p. 102]. Pater quickly sent the last-minute title Appreciations, with an Essay on Style, and the book appeared on 16 November 1889.
