The book known as Walter Pater’s The Renaissance was twenty-one years in the making. Although the first edition was published in 1873, under the title Studies in the History of the Renaissance, the book did not reach its final shape until the third edition, published in 1888. The title had changed with the second edition, 1877, to The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry. All editions have contained five full essays published before 1873: “Winckelmann” (1867); “Leonardo da Vinci” (1869); Sandro Botticelli” (1870); “Pico della Mirandola” and “The Poetry of Michelangelo” (1871).
