She was first published in the illustrated weekly The Graphic from October 1886 to January 1887, then as a volume by Harper's Franklin Square Library on 24 December 1886 and on 1st January 1887 by Longmans & Co. in London. The US edition had 14 full page illustrations by E. K. Johnson, but the British had to wait until 1888 for the first illustrated UK edition, this having adding 32 illustrations, 19 of which are full page, by Maurice Greiffenhagen & C. H. M. Kerr. The relation of these texts to the publishing of illustrated magazines and novels, especially for the colonial or imperial market, should always be born in mind.
