Editor’s Note: The Rings of Saturn is offered to its readers as a narrative of a walk in the county of Suffolk undertaken by its melancholic author in August 1992, a narrative which is begun “in the hope of dispelling the emptiness which takes hold of [the author] whenever [he has] completed a long spell of work”.The author tells his reader that he only began to set his notes in order one year later, after he had been “taken into hospital in Norwich in a state of almost total immobility” (Sebald, 1995, p. 3).
