What the Twilight Says is the first collection of prose writing by the Caribbean Nobel laureate Derek Walcott. It was first published in 1998 by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux in the U.S. and by Faber & Faber in Great Britain (all references in this entry are to the Faber & Faber edition). The collection is divided into three sections. The first consists of three wide-ranging essays of cultural criticism: “What the Twilight Says”, “The Muse of History”, and Walcott’s Nobel Prize Lecture, “The Antilles: Fragments of Epic Memory”.
