In addition to his acclaimed fiction: Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, Red Badge of Courage and “The Open Boat”, Stephen Crane produced two volumes of poetry (along with some uncollected poems found after his death). His second book of poems, War is Kind, containing 37 poems, was published in May 1899, one year before his death in June 1900. This followed Black Riders and Other Lines, published in 1895.

The poems in War is Kind were “written intermittently from the fall of 1894 until they were collected for the press in 1899” (LaFrance 131). Two of the poems in this second volume, # 3 and # 16, had originally been intended for Black Riders, but were …
