John Knox's An Answere to a Great Nomber of Blasphemous Cavillations written by an Anabaptist, and adversarie to Gods eternal Predestination (1560), the short title of which is simply On Predestination, belongs to the third of four categories identified in the Reformer's writings by David Laing, the first editor of an essentially complete edition of Knox's works (Edinburgh, 1846-64). Laing regarded it as a “controversial” or “devotional” text. The former it certainly is, but twenty-first century readers might have difficulty classifying it as the latter.
