The Unvanquished was Faulkner’s tenth novel, the seventh set in Yoknapatawpha County, published on 15 February 1938. Six of the seven chapters had previously been published as short stories: “Ambuscade” on 29 September 1934 in The Saturday Evening Post, “Retreat” on 13 October 1934 in the Post, “Raid” on 3 November 1934 in the Post, “The Unvanquished” (retitled “Riposte in Tertio” in the novel) on 14 November 1936 in the Post, “Vendée” on 5 December 1936 in the Post, and “Skirmish at Sartoris” (originally titled “Drusilla&…
