The Revenger’s Tragedy was most probably written in 1606, and published as a quarto edition in 1607/8. The title-page of this edition states that the play was performed by the King’s Men, presumably in 1606 or 1607. However, there has been some debate about this attribution. While most critics agree that The Revenger’s Tragedy was first performed by the King’s Men at the Globe playhouse, others including R. V. Holdsworth have suggested that the play was originally written for one of the boys’ companies playing in London’s indoor theatres. This argument about the play’s performance history is linked to the wider controversy about its authorship, a topic that has preoccupied scholars for many decades.
