By the end of 1873, Anthony Trollope had published a series of four interconnected novels dealing with politics and including the Liberal politician Plantagenet Palliser and his wife Lady Glencora as either major or minor characters. These works and their two successors would later become known as the “Palliser Novels.” The first Palliser novel, Can You Forgive Her?, traces the traumatic early years of Plantagenet and Glencora's arranged marriage, years which end in the birth of a son and the development of some affection and trust between the spouses.
