A Pageant and Other Poems, Christina Rossetti's fourth poetry collection, was published in July 1881. Demonstrating the growing strength of Rossetti's reputation, Alexander Macmillan agreed to publish the collection sight unseen. In May 1881, Rossetti wrote to her brother Dante Gabriel to share this news: “I am quite pleased about Macmillan, because he said yes without asking to see the M.S. or making a single enquiry as to either bulk or subject” (The Letters of Christina Rossetti, ed. Antony Harrison, 274). Letters written after the publication of the book suggest that Rossetti enjoyed writing it and was pleased with the completed collection.
