“Berenice” (1835), T.O. Mabbott suggests, has been “received […] variously” by critics but “almost no selection omits it” even though the tale is somewhat “repulsive” (Poe 2:207). It was first published in the March 1835 edition of the Southern Literary Messenger, in Richmond. Further publications of the tale emerged in Poe’s famous collection Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque (for November of 1839), and in the Broadway Journal for April of 1845, with another reprint that same month in the Philadelphian Spirit of the Times.
