Yvonne Vera belongs to a group of Zimbabwean authors, like Charles Mungoshi, Dambudzo Marechera and Stanley Nyamfukudza, who grew up during the second Chimurenga (1966–79) anti-colonial struggle (chimurenga, in Shona, means “struggle”) which led to the end of white-minority rule in Rhodesia, as Zimbabwe was then called. They emerged on the African literature scene from the 1980s and the early 1990s and became the witnesses of the failure of decolonisation – after Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980 – to improve the lives of the majority of the country’s citizens. Yvonne Vera was born in 1964 in Bulawayo, present-day Zimbabwe, and died in 2005 in Canada, where she had gone to get medical …
