Text, Title, and Style
An early draft of the play was published in 1948 as Ten Blocks on the Camino Real: A Fantasy (American Blues 43–77). The later, longer version discussed here appeared in print in 1953—the year of the play’s first staging on Broadway. Note, however, that this published Camino Real represents a considerably revised version of the actual Broadway production script. It is a reading text, not a record of theatrical practice.
The play’s title puns on the Spanish for “Royal Road”, camino real (pronounced “kau-mee-noh reh-aul”), by altering its pronunciation. The new pronunciation (“kah-mih-noh reel”) …
