During Napoleon’s rise to the status of Emperor and his conquest of Germany in 1806, Mme de Staël was banned from Paris and stayed at Coppet, her retreat on Lake Geneva, until she could return to Paris after Napoleon’s defeat in 1814. While in exile she travelled to England and to Germany, where she made the eminent literary critic August Wilhelm Schlegel her constant companion. During the time spent with the classical German poets in Weimar (1803-04; 1807-08), Mme de Staël collected and worked on notes for De l’Allemagne [On Germany]. The printing of this text was stopped by order of Napoleon as being “un-French”, since it praised Germany instead of France, according to …
