Prolific American Southern writer Eudora Welty, who passed away in July of 2001 at the age of 92, will perhaps be best remembered for her autobiographical text One Writer's Beginnings (1983), as well as for her short stories and the quirky characters that populate them. However, Welty also made several notable forays into novel-writing in the course of her seven–decade career. Her first published work of long fiction, Delta Wedding (1946), received mixed notices from critics. A clip from a review from The Christian Science Monitor reprinted on the back cover of the current U.S. paperback edition hails the work for presenting “the essence of the Deep South … with infinite finesse”.
