The Interpretation of Dreams was first published in 1899 and was Freud’s second psychoanalytic monograph, following Studies on Hysteria (1895) which he co-authored with Josef Breuer. It was the first work in which Freud attempted extensively to set out his new understanding of relations between the conscious and unconscious psychic processes, and in particular how unconscious drives have manifest effects on behaviour which hitherto would have been considered conscious and rational. Dreams, in particular, he interpreted as symbolic formations which appear in the conscious mind in an imaginative attempt to fulfill a repressed wish.
