Max Weber's Die protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus [The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism] provided a theory of the rise of capitalism which deeply influenced historical thought in the twentieth century. It was originally published as essays in 1904-1905 by the Archiv für soziale Gesetzgebung und Statistik, Tübingen. In 1930 it was translated into English for an edition published by George Allen and Unwin. The translator, Talcott Parsons, was then a young Tutor in Economics at Harvard but destined to become one of the most prominent social theorists of the 1960s.
