Friedrich Nietzsche’s Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik [The Birth of Tragedy, 1872], written in Basel between 1869 and 1871, was his first major work, and Nietzsche subsequently appended an “Attempt at a Self-Criticism” to the introduction and amended its title to Die Geburt der Tragödie oder Griechenthum und Pessimismus in 1886. The text belongs to the Romantic tradition and exhibits a multiplicity of arguments in relation to art, aesthetics, and tragedy, and is an attempt to find inspiration in Richard Wagner’s operatic works for a rebirth of Greek cultural values in Nietzsche’s contemporary German society.
