Enderby Outside takes up the tale of the poet Enderby where Inside Mr Enderby leaves off, beginning with the poet “cured” of his urge to write, and fitted with a new identity, that of Piggy Hogg, a barman in a London hotel. Enderby is “outside” in the slang sense of being free from the jail-like confines of the sanatorium whence he had been dispatched by Dr Wapenshaw. He is also outside his own personality, having repressed his artistic urge, and replaced his drive towards the creation of verse with the creation of cocktails.

Burgess lays the groundwork of the plot early on, establishing the fact that one of Enderby’s co-workers has a bar in Tangier, and that his enemy Rawcliffe is also to be located …
