Among Ovid’s works, the Fasti is the least known and most enigmatic one: having long been only considered a source for the history of Roman religion, in the last few decades scholars have recognized its status as a learned and sophisticated text, and have since been investigating its literary and political levels, as well as interactions between them. Studies on the Fasti have mainly focused on two questions: its genre, with the Fasti being a ‘longer’ elegy which is defined negatively in contrast with love elegy, on the one hand, and the Metamorphoses (Ovid’s epic poem, written in the same years between 2 BCE and 8 CE) on the other hand; and its role in the context of Augustan ideology, as some …
