Flight into Camden, the second published novel by David Storey (1933-2017), appeared in the same year as his first, This Sporting Life (1960), and enhanced its author’s status as a significant postwar British novelist. It was in fact the first novel he wrote. According to his posthumously published memoir, A Stinging Delight (2021), he had begun it eight years previously, “sitting on the lavatory – ‘How long are you going to be in there?’ – because there was no other place of privacy in the house” on the council estate where he then lived with his parents and two brothers (109).
