Constance Fenimore Woolson's novella For the Major ran serially in Harper's New Monthly Magazine from November 1882 to April 1883. That same year it was also published in book form in New York and London. A small masterpiece of imagination and execution, For the Major represents the culmination of Woolson's artistic treatment of the post-Civil War South, a scene she had known intimately as both visitor and resident and which provided the background for some of her finest short stories.
