Originally serialised in Harper's Magazine in 1892, Constance Fenimore Woolson's last novel Horace Chase came out in book form in 1894, the year of her death. The character of the title is a self-made millionaire in his mid-forties who marries Ruth Franklin, almost twenty years his junior. Their union, very reluctantly accepted by Ruth's widowed mother and her older siblings, Dolly and Jared, revolutionises the until then financially precarious life of the Franklin family. In the years that follow, the businessman's unfailing generosity, his solid reliability and boundless devotion to his wife, gradually win the Franklins' gratitude and respect, but never their affection.
