In her poetry, Elaine Feinstein explores and evokes the intricate details of relationships in families with honesty and delicacy. Poems to her growing sons betray a tenderness, and an ability to see them as individuals removed from her, their own identities developing, needing a nurturing which she wished to provide and occasionally felt was a role she played. Her poetic voice is lyrical, clever, imagistic. She captures feelings and atmospheres with absolutely appropriate imagery and comparisons, each word counting, expressing emotions tautly, describing the mixed feelings of love and irritation with everyday relationships, evoking moments of tensions, conflict, loss and closeness with magical or naturalistic imagery.
