Charlotte Perkins Gilman's first collection of poetry, In This Our World, was published by McCombs & Vaughn in Oakland, California, in 1893. The slim volume, containing just seventy-three poems, was enthusiastically received both in the United States and in Europe. The Overland Monthly opined that it contained “some of the most noteworthy verse of the sort that has been published for years in this country,” while the San Francisco Star applauded its “sudden turns of sarcastic wit.“

While the volume boasted a wide variety of poetical topics, from nature poetry to feminist anthems to political verse, Gilman's satirical poems were particularly well received. William Dean Howells declared them “the …
