The Knight of Malta was probably performed in 1617 when it was acted by the King’s Men at the Globe theatre and at Blackfriars. However, it was not printed until 1647 (when London theatres were closed) as part of a collection of plays under the title Comedies and Tragedies Written By Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher. The folio includes thirty-four plays and a masque. Both Fletcher and Beaumont found commercial success in their collaborative work, particularly with Philaster (1609?), The Maid’s Tragedy (1610?) and A King and No King (1611), and it is often difficult to distinguish between the singly-authored plays and collaborative efforts.
