The first edition of Constant’s Journaux intimes [Personal Diaries] appeared in 1952 and brought together under this collective title four manuscripts left unpublished by the author. He had given no titles to three of them, which editors have called respectively “Journal abrégé” [Summary Diary], “Journal (1804-1805)”, and “Journal (1811-1816). The Journal abrégé runs from 22 January 1804 to 27 December 1807. The Journal (1804-1805) also starts on 22 January 1804 but ends on 7 May 1805.
