Pavel Kohout’s bestselling novel Nápady svaté Kláry [The Premonitions of St Clara] was first published in German in Hamburg in 1980, and then in the original Czech in Toronto in 1981. Translations into other languages, Norwegian and Hebrew among them (but not English yet), followed soon. Kohout wrote Klára in exile, after he and his third wife Jelena Mašínová had been, for their dissident activity, stripped of the Czechoslovak citizenship during their 1979 work-related trip to Austria.
