The fifth of Trollope’s novels to be set in the imaginary county of Barsetshire, The Small House at Allington, was completed in 1863. During the next three years, Trollope wrote six novels unconnected to Barsetshire and much non-fiction. This non-fiction included “sketches” describing various clerical character types, which were published in book form in 1866 as Clergymen of the Church of England.
