This entry discusses the tales by Chauveau that, when published during his lifetime, were marketed at children, although it is likely that they are now more popular with adults. To make this entry accessible to those without French, I will focus on stories that are entirely original rather than those that take inspiration from the Old French Roman de Renart and La Fontaine’s Fables. Most quotes will be from stories already available in my English translation, together with “The Old Crocodile” (2005) – an animated film by Koji Yamamura, derived from a faithful adaptation of Yasuhiro Deguchi’s Japanese translation, that uses Chauveau’s original illustrations and is available on YouTube …
