Dust Under Her Feet (2019) by the Bangladeshi-American author and professor of Creative Writing, Sharbari Zohra Ahmed, is a contemporary South Asian American novel that deserves attention for brilliantly revealing a lesser known part of the history of World War II involving Americans in India. Ahmed’s debut novel entwines a story of love and war between Lieutenant Edward Lafaver, an American soldier, and Yasmine Khan, a young charismatic Bengali proprietor of a nightclub in 1940s Calcutta. Through the letter written in 1959 to Akash Alexander Khan by his mother, Yasmine, the beginning of the novel partially reveals the outcome of this interracial relationship that sprouts under the challenging circumstances of World War II…
