First published in 1947, “Chiquinho” is considered as the milestone of cape-verdean literature and has been an important object of study to many disciplines because of its cultural and literary relevance. Written by Baltasar Lopes da Silva, one of the founders of the Claridade Literary Movement and Magazine, the narrative represents one of the first realist literary experiment in Cape Verde and allows the reader to picture the life in the archipelago, while also touching on contemporary thematics such as immigration, diasporic contexts and the dichotomy between staying and leaving.
