Englands Helicon was published in two versions: a first edition in 1600, and a second in 1614. The 1600 version was printed for John Flasket, and most probably edited by Nicholas Ling, who signed the prefatory address “To the reader, if indifferent” and who “collected the material for that volume” (Bullen xi). Carroll (43) points out that the title is a near-anagram of the editor’s name, a playful allusion similar to the pictorial rebus of Ling’s device. Others may have had a hand in putting it together (see Macdonald xix): there is a prefatory sonnet by “A. B.” dedicated to the wealthy grocer and literary patron John Bodenham, as well as a short letter, also by “A. B.”…
