Kazi Nazrul Islam’s novel Bandhon Hara [Unfettered] began to be serialized in Moslem Bharat [Muslim India] from mid-April 1920 and was published as a book in 1927. The first of his three novels, it is notable for the autobiographical details it provides of the writer’s life as a soldier in Karachi. At the same time this epistolary novel – perhaps the first such novel written in Bengali – also provides details of the lives of Muslim women in the early years of the twentieth century. In addition to the Muslim women, there is also a Brahmo woman in the novel, whose function is to show the contrast between the lives of Muslim women and the freer Brahmo woman.
