Mir Mosharraf Hossain (1847? -1911?) initially published his best-known work, Bishad-Sindhu [Ocean of Sorrow], in three books. The first book of this Bengali epic novel when translated into English was titled “History of the Muharram” and was published in 1885; the second, “Rescue”, came out in 1887, and the third, “The Killing of Yazid” saw the light of print in 1891. The novel became immensely popular during Hossain’s lifetime; by the time he died in 1911 it was into its eighth edition.
