John le Carré, penname of David Cornwell, published Agent Running in the Field (2019) during the political and economic upheavals brought about by the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union (EU). In 1973, the UK joined the EU. In 2016, under pressure from Eurosceptic groups, the UK narrowly voted to leave the EU alliances. Called “Brexit” (a portmanteau of “British” and “exit”), the vote convulsed UK and EU politics. Over the next several years, the UK struggled with the political, economic, and access issues resulting from this vote and the conservative political determination to withdraw.
