Though incomplete, Egipetskie nochi [The Egyptian Nights] is among the finest and most original of Pushkin’s works. First published in 1837, not long after his death, it consists of three prose sections, written in autumn 1835, and two passages of verse. The first passage of verse incorporates lines from the unfinished narrative poem Ezerskii (“Yezersky”, 1832-33); the second is an expansion of a poem about Cleopatra that Pushkin drafted in 1824 and revised in 1828 (O’Bell, pp. 97-121). Pushkin would almost certainly have subjected the verse passages to further revision had he gone on to complete The Egyptian Nights (Debreczeny, 292). The three prose sections …
