Published in 1890, Hauntings is the first of Lee’s main collections of ghost stories, although three of the stories were previously published elsewhere. Out of fashion and marginalised for many years, despite her large and varied oeuvre, Lee’s ghost stories demonstrate “imaginative complexity” (Maxwell, 2013: 278) and explore Lee’s aestheticism of the past and “Victorian fascination with the Renaissance” (Smith, 2010: 76).
