The Servite friar Paolo Sarpi (1552-1623) was a brilliant political scholar, theologian, and natural philosopher who gained international popularity as a historian with his History of the Council of Trent (Istoria del Concilio Tridentino). The Council of Trent (Concilium Tridentinum) was held between 1545 and 1563 to reaffirm traditional Catholic beliefs in response to the Protestant Reformation, but it failed to heal the schism that had sundered the Western Christian church. Sarpi, whose dissatisfaction with the Council brought him to write the History, points out the reason for this failure, criticizing church authorities and denouncing the pope’s abuse of power.
